Thinking, Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman
General Theme: This book was about the fight between the two systems in the brain, conscious and automatic, that we need to learn to use to benefit us rather than allowing them to create errors.
Connect and Enhance ENT3003: Some of the assignments in this class seem really simple at first glance. But it is obvious that some people have rushed through them because they don't always understand the actual meaning of them. Sometimes they miss the actual question that needs to be answered because their brains convince them so quickly otherwise. I now see questions more thoroughly and like to make sure I am actually making the point the professor expected.
An Exercise Based on Book: I would ask students complex questions that wouldn't be easily answered at first glance. I would have them give a brief explanation as to why they got the answer. Then, I would not provide an answer key to the questions till after. Once they have their "ohhh" moment, I would have them reflect on what key pieces they missed in the question that steered them in the wrong direction and how to avoid the same mistake next time.
Biggest Surprise: I couldn't believe that we don't usually use our brain in its entirety. It is more of a conditioned thing to use more of the skills your brain has but won't do. You have to know how to focus to change your brain from doing its automatic thoughts because that is how it gets tricked.
Hey Nina,
ReplyDeleteIt is so interesting that we are constantly fighting between the two parts of our brain. I like the idea of the book and the exploration of this on going phenomena. Furthermore, I like your idea about talking about complex ideas in these books and using important parts to be tested on in order for us to grasp the concept of each book.
Best,
