Assignment 28A - Exit Strategy

Exit Strategy
This organization was never meant to be a short term thing for me. With the direction are government has been going in, this business is supposed to be a long term establishment. I want it to continue to expand and make it a norm for our country. I would love to be able to work on this for a lifetime and pass it onto my children if they do share the same passion to help others. As long as immigration continues to occur, and the laws that go with it continue to be enforced, I want my facilities to still exist.

Why
I chose this because I feel the opportunity will be open for a long time, if not forever. If I can just pass on the rights to another relative who will share the same passion the facilities will continue to do what they were created for.

Influence Decisions
All my decisions have been made based off the assumption that the business will be here for the unforeseeable future. My step by step process always seems to include another opportunity at growing whether it be with more employees, volunteers, or facilities themselves.

Assignment 27A - Reading Reflection #3

Thinking, Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman

General Theme: This book was about the fight between the two systems in the brain, conscious and automatic, that we need to learn to use to benefit us rather than allowing them to create errors.

Connect and Enhance ENT3003: Some of the assignments in this class seem really simple at first glance. But it is obvious that some people have rushed through them because they don't always understand the actual meaning of them. Sometimes they miss the actual question that needs to be answered because their brains convince them so quickly otherwise. I now see questions more thoroughly and like to make sure I am actually making the point the professor expected.

An Exercise Based on Book:  I would ask students complex questions that wouldn't be easily answered at first glance. I would have them give a brief explanation as to why they got the answer. Then, I would not provide an answer key to the questions till after. Once they have their "ohhh" moment, I would have them reflect on what key pieces they missed in the question that steered them in the wrong direction and how to avoid the same mistake next time.

Biggest Surprise:  I couldn't believe that we don't usually use our brain in its entirety. It is more of a conditioned thing to use more of the skills your brain has but won't do. You have to know how to focus to change your brain from doing its automatic thoughts because that is how it gets tricked.

Assignment 26A - Celebrating Failure

My Failure
This semester I've actually failed on multiple quizzes, or "cupcakes." This is obviously because I either didn't take the content seriously, or didn't utilize it at all. Whenever I do this, I assume I will just get lucky by guessing, but obviously that isn't the case.

What I Learned
I learned that if I want a specific outcome out of anything, I need to put the actual work in for it. In this case, the effort is simply watching the lectures in their entirety. But, in anything, you have to put 100% if you want to see that great outcome you envision.

Reflection
Before, I used to take failure and dwell on it. Now, instead of just sulking on it, I just try to bounce back. To do this, I plan exactly what I need to do in order to not cause the same outcome. This class really has allowed me to take more risks without being too careful in deciding to. Taking risks lead to way less regrets and creating "what if" scenarios. I've taken a new "go for it" mindset instead.

Assignment 24A - Venture Concept #1

Opportunity

  • Who:
    • The who in this organization is obvious. I've focused on the immigrant children who have and continue to be shoved into the current facilities America has set up. Those
  • Forces:
    • This opportunity has always been somewhat existing. Immigrants were always coming over illegally and being detained, but the rapid growth has been caused by the take over of the Trump administration. Since they've risen to power, the government has become very harsh on immigrants and taking it more seriously with raids capturing many of them. Because of this, the current facilities weren't built for this abundance and are being overfilled.
  • Geographic / Demographic:
    • Geographically, these facilities would be needed in the outer states where most immigrants come to. These states include mainly California, Florida, Texas, and New York. Demographically speaking, it mainly be those who aren't native to the country. But, when speaking on raising the financial capital it would include just about any demographic.
  • Current Satisfaction & Loyalty:
    • Right now, there are no other facilities to satisfy this need. For this reason, immigrants continue to struggle, suffer, and in some cases pass away. Loyalty does not completely apply as they don't have a choice. There are many organizations who push to support immigrants, protest for them, and protect them, but none have tried to create facilities like this one wants to.
  • SIZE of Opportunity:
    • This opportunity is actually huge. This would pulling off what people have thought and wished they could assist by doing, but never had the nerve to. It is going against what the government sees as "good enough" and making it more manageable.
  • Time:
    • As long as the raids continue and the immigration laws get tighter, this opportunity will last open. It won't change until the government realizes the number of deaths is too many to begin with.

Innovation

  • What it IS:
    • This is a temporary LIVING. When I say living, I put it in place of suffering. That is what is happening every single day to those children who have been shoved into this reality that doesn't even seem worth living for. A place where they smell toxicity, see people sick, and lay so close to one another. My organization looks to change suffering to temporary living. A place that makes it impossible to escape, but won't even need to. A place where there is no possibility of watching a fellow prisoner rotting away to death. A place where there is food, bed, and a shower. Filled with essentials such as water and meals.
  • What it DOES:
    • I've created this to stop death. Young children no longer have to fend for themselves as if they were abandoned in a wilderness. It allows those with immigrant families to continue living without worry of their suffering family members who were captured. The number of deaths would decrease and the hope is to completely come to an end.
  • What it COSTs:
    • The cost is a couple bucks a person. Anything ranging from $1 to hundreds to thousands, the possibilities are endless. No matter how much a person donates anything will be helpful. If thousands of people donated a couple bucks we'd be further than the starting balance of 0.

Venture Concept

  • Reasons to Support and the Difficulty:
    • It would be easier to convince the general public of this organization because there aren't really any other options at this time. There also isn't a specific limit to the help they can give. They could give as little as they can, as much as they want, or simply spend their time volunteering. If they want to truly make an actual tangible difference, this would be the only way to do it.
  • Competitors and Weaknesses:
    • There is really no reason to need to compete. No need to show this company is better than another because there are no other organizations that have pushed for this. Sure, they protest for better or more facilities, but none have thought of simply creating their own with limitations. The only possible weakness would be the slow growth of funds. If this does not catch the attention as expected from social media it could be a long time before a specific goal is reached to even build a facility. Without a facility in the first place the organization will not be anything yet.
  • Organization and Roles:
    • The organization, as previously stated, will be a nonprofit. It will rely on government support and the funds raised from donations. The employees will begin as volunteers. It will not be hard to find these volunteers as there are already individuals volunteering in other organizations I choose to combine with. They will be those who brainstorm, who clean the facilities, who cook, and deal with the paperwork. After months of serious growth, the government would allow for salaries for these employees. If the first facility does not happen, the entire business will crumble and it is the most important role.
Minor Elements
  • Most Important Resource:
    • Human Capital is the MOST important resource. Without those who bring in ideas the entire concept can't be created. Without those who develop websites, there will be no means of maintaining the funds in an easy way. Without those who volunteer to maintain the facilities, the same chaos in the current facilities will also occur. Without the people the organization would be impossible.
  • What's Next:
    • The next step is the meeting with those from different organizations. This is the main ingredient to the beginning of change. My own ideas won't be enough. There needs to be certain experiences I haven't had mixed into the conversation. There are those whp have seen things I haven't seen myself. The meeting will kickstart it in a way that will seem thorough and detailed because of careful consideration from different directions.
  • Next for Me:
    • In 5 years, I would want at least 2 new facilities. This may seem like a small change but it would make a big difference to those children who had to already experience the previous conditions. In a decade, I want my facilities to be a common know solution to those immigrants who have been captured. I want to expand to not just children but to people of all ages. This way, families wouldn't need to separate at all.

Assignment 25A - What's Next?

Existing Market
My very first step would be to set a team. The members will include different leaders of those existing nonprofit organizations that already support or assist immigrants. We will all input our own ideas and experiences and blend them together to come up with the best way to organize this nonprofit. Next, I would gather groups of people from these organizations to begin assisting as volunteers who would later get paid after the business has kicked off.
The important part would be gaining the funds. I would need a team to create and develop a website for the company. This is a major step because it is what will make the entire organization survive. By having a shareable link, it makes the lengths of growth unstoppable. Having these volunteers devoted to sharing this with social media or friends and family will be a key point in growth. This is where the sympathetic and empathetic general population will begin to take notice. This market won't include any wealthy or famous individuals because it will not be known enough to get their attention just yet.
Once the first goal of financial capital is reached, the construction and development of the very first facilities will be in full swing. I probably will place this first one on the California border because that is where most of the immigrants come into. Once we are able to process a couple of the children into it, many will see the difference quickly.
New Market
My first step to success with the wealthy investor market is improving my pitch to the best of my ability. I would need to search for feedback in ways that I haven't before. This is no surprise, but it would be a difficult step. I would need to be completely comfortable with being criticized constructively and being rejected. It has to be convincing enough that someone who has heard many different ideas and business plans, that they would see the potential in this opportunity. Instead of convincing them to make more money, it would have to pull at the heart strings and give them a sense of satisfaction for helping those who don't have what they are lucky enough to have.
This new market is something I want my organization to get to eventually, but it isn't something I plan on doing in the very beginning. I expected it to feel much easier because of how passionate I am about the issue, but not everyone will feel the same. It needs to be articulated in a way that will show the benefits that will come that obviously don't include a profit.

Assignment 22A - Elevator Pitch #3

Link to Video

Feedback:  Once again, people mentioned my use of emotional attention from the viewers. I still feel like this is a very important concept in my elevator pitch because that really attracts those who are empathetic and would actually want to help out by any means. What I did realize was that I do need to seek some form of negative feedback. I really wanted to improve but did not have much to work with in terms of exactly what to change. I would like to say though that my main purpose is not to make "sales" as it is a non-profit. The main focus are the immigrant children solely. I just want to make their lives better and if the only way to do that is to give the not so pretty truth, I must.
Change: What I changed this time was my appearance. I wanted to show how unappealing it is to see someone living like this especially if it isn't even at their own will. It is not fair to let children live as if they have been homeless instead of treating them to actually live more years in their lives.

Assignment 20A - Growing Your Social Capital

Person #1
Who: Alexander Ramirez is a man who is of Hispanic ethnic background. He is a coordinator in a local movement which supports immigrants and protests against ICE. I would consider him my domain expert.
How in Contact: I have a friend from high school who participates in the different events that this group organizes.
Exchange: He was just able to explain to me his purpose for what he does. He does not believe in snatching the freedom of those who fled in search of it. He did no favors, and I was not expecting any, but I did want to feel like my purpose matter. Mr. Ramirez was able to put into perspective how important it was to stand up for those who could not.
How Will They Enhance Your Opportunity: After already having so many people apart of his movement, he offered to help gain any support he could if I were to actually try to begin my organization. He offered to plan events that would help kick start my project at least..

Person #2
Who: Sofia Pillson was one of my first friends in high school. Since we've graduated she has participated in so many different protests an even traveled to different parts of Florida and different states to continue these actions. I felt she was a market expert because she had so much personal experiences with fighting for immigrants. One time she even was arrested for protesting against ICE raids by sitting in the middle of the street.
How in Contact:  A former friend from my high school. Talked on social media.
Exchange: She gave me a lot insight on her experiences and the people shes met throughout her time serving. She gave me exactly what I was expecting. I always found her very interesting and intellectual and she allowed me inside to see what exactly she fights for. She's even joined campaigns and has many connects to organizations fighting for immigrants.
How Will They Enhance Your Opportunity:  She has relationships with coordinators from different organizations that would probably assist my own without a question.

Person #3
Who: It was difficult to find a supplier for my type of business. In all honesty, I feel like the suppliers are "you." Those who help out, donate, and give their time to this type of business. Those are all the tools we need to make it become a reality.
   How in Contact:

Assignment 21A - Reading Reflection #2

Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck

General Theme / Argument:
People have a choice to choose their mindset which will lead to either failure or to the goal.
Connection with ENT3003:
I've realized that success does rely a tremendous amount on mindset. There are certain skills that I could work on that could really be the spark for success. I had always heard about mindset being important but the story really made me believe that if I actually wanted to go through with the business I've created in this class I could.
Exercise Based on Reading:
Take a quiz based on the different mindset characteristics. Circle or choose the descriptions that you most relate to or best fits you. Then once you've figured out which mindset you are currently in, pick 3 important pieces you'd like to change to improve yourself.
Biggest Surprise:
I realized being stuck in a fixed mindset will not allow for as much improvement as a growth mindset would. My dad always told me we are constantly learning and that it is important. Now I see it is because improvement and growth is the key to a successful life or vision.

Assignment 19A - Idea Napkin #2

You:

I am a woman of color. I am passionate, sensitive, and sympathetic. Once I set my mind to something. I've experienced immigrant families in my inner circle some blood and some family friends. I've seen the struggles of those who just want the opportunity to live the life of an American. These are probably the reasons why I aspire to give the innocent children a different life. It is also because it wasn't their choice to do this in the first place so they shouldn't have to suffer completely and risk their lives.

Offering to Customers:

I am trying to solve the suffering and improve the health of children who are being stuffed in the facilities.
Who Offering To:

I want to focus this offer to the general public. Those who are willing to help those who cannot help themselves. I truly believe most of the funds will come from those who willingly donate on a website or at special events.

Why They Care:

I really feel like it is easy to show care for children who did not even get a choice in their circumstances.

Core Competencies:
As of right now, their are no other nonprofit organizations like mine. Sure, people do speak on the topic and wish they can help but it is all about action.

Piecing it TOGETHER:

With all the pieces together, I feel like one thing really leads to another. The company doesn't really need a lot of explaining. The why speaks in itself. The photos and the visuals really show pain. The stories of deaths bring hurt and passion to change.

Feedback Memo:
I learned from my feedback that it would be pretty easy to gather many supporters. They pointed out how today's social media could make an organization like this really inspire others to help. Many people would be able to share it with each other and it could really make a big change. I would have to make sure I use the right advertising strategy though.

Assignment 17A - Elevator Pitch Pt. 2

Elevator Pitch 2

Feedback Analysis

The feedback from my first elevator pitch was really positive. They liked the entire way I carried the message. What I really focused on was the way I brought out the emotion. I tried to make the audience feel connected in some way. I drew into them to think about some child that meant something to them and to think about them suffering. It pulls on the heart strings and makes them actually want to help those. Another thing I used was the ending question. Something that makes a person think within themselves if they actually want to help. The why they should help. Sort of in a guilty way if they didn't. There was not really any negative feedback that caught me off guard or made me change in any type of way.

Assignment 18A - Create Customer Avatar

My usual customer would probably belong to the low to middle class in society. More specifically women of minority background. Women tend to be more empathetic, especially to children in need. The kind of people who don't have the designer clothes, the newest and best car, or the biggest house. The one who goes to their daily 9-5 and hate their job but push on for their family. The type in their 30s and 40s, whose lifestyle makes them feel way older and deteriorating. They enjoy dramatic TV shows and Lifetime movies. They listen to old school RnB, soul music, and slow songs that are in their native language. Their favorite thing to do is enjoy family time or scroll on Facebook watching funny or emotional videos.

When I was describing this general customer, I found myself describing a good mixture between my mother and I. I feel that the people who go through any slight struggle at all are the ones who usually will help those in need the most. It's obvious those of minority will be helpful as well, especially if their own family can be the ones going through it.
