Assignment 6A - Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

Economic

Article #1: "Prepare for cannabis growth, not 'green rush' in Florida, Colorado pot czar warns"
Where: Miami Herald.2 State of Florida
What: The implementation of the cannabis industry will be nothing like the gold rush because it takes investment and time. Government rules determine exactly how successful it will be.
Who: Grows and producers, business, users and customers
Difficulty to Exploit: The more people who become on board and vote toward marijuana legality the easier it will be for business to explode. More support means that Florida can be just as successful as other states have been economically who allow the commercial use of marijuana. Treating it as a crop rather than anything else will allow for more investment.
Article #2: "FPL preaches major solar expansion - but only under its control documents show"
      Where: Miami Herald.3
What: The demand for solar power has gone up, kept the FPL costs down, and given more profit
      Who: Businesses, investors, customers
Difficulty to Exploit: Everyone is about the environment friendly wave. They just don't realize how much money it is costing them.

Regulatory

Article #1: "Trump's immigration policies keep more than 20,000 Cubans in limbo"
Where: Miami Herald; Between Cuba and the United States.
What: Families have waited years to be reunited only to be delayed even longer because of the Trump administration. Because of this reduction in staff, the U.S. has not met its quota for the visas they provide to those Cuban immigrants who try to leave the country because of the dictatorship that has been there. Not only has this slowed the process down, the administration has also put more restrictions in place.
Who: Families, children, immigrants, views of US citizens toward the administration, refugees
Difficulty to Exploit: I feel it is an easy problem to get support from people but it is not an easy problem to change. The power is really in the government and Trump to make actual change and the only thing people can do is ruin the government's reputation and morale of the country.
Why: I see this as an opportunity because I have had family who were once immigrants. The people who migrate to the US are only looking for better lives that their home country wasn't able to provide. It hits home because my grandparents and aunts/uncles did the same. If they were restricted or separated from us, I could only imagine the strain it would put on the children and the family altogether.
Article #2: "Teachers have enough stress. Arming them will only make it worse - much worse"
      Where: Miami Herald.1; Throughout Florida
What: Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill that allows teachers to be armed in public school classrooms. In a panic from all the recent school shootings, it was obvious that change needed to happen.
Who: The schools themselves, the teachers, the students, the parents/families, the communities
Difficulty to Exploit: Like the last regulatory problem I proposed, it all leads back to the government. There are already so many people, especially in Florida, that opposed this kind of bill and districts themselves are already denying it. We leave this type of decision to the government and in my opinion it abuses the power.
Why: I live 10 minutes from MSD and I felt what the entire community felt that day. By all means I would love a solution, but we most definitely know that this isn't that solution.

Assignment 3A - Entrepreneur Story

Before I could even define entrepreneurship, I used some skills of one way back in elementary school. When I was around 7 or 8 years old, bringing candy for snack or lunch was restricted at my school. This message was obviously passed onto the parents who, in turn, would not pack any for their children. My parents still managed to leave pieces in my backpack which I would eat while sitting with my friends in the cafeteria. One of those times, one of them offered 50 cents for a mini chocolate bar. Being young, I saw a big opportunity in earning 50 cents to a dollar for bringing in candy even if it wasn’t supposed to be “allowed.” I would then ask my mother to buy the big bags of mini bars instead of individuals without telling her my exact reasoning. She did not realize I was bringing a couple more to sell to classmates. This was my first hustle, and it is something I will always remember as a humorous entrepreneurship story.
I picked this class because I am actually really interested in entrepreneurship characteristics and skills that I want to adopt myself. My dad has always talked to me about what an entrepreneur is and how great it is to help find solutions to problems and work for yourself. I hope to come out of this class with a new outlook on the world around me and, hopefully, a new big idea within myself to kick start a great business.
